Anyone using this pack? Comments? Reviews?
THANKS!
Also: Am I just somehow missing the motherload of LJ communities having to do with backpacking? Or do backpackers travel too much to actually be online? Would love to add to my reading list...

Hi all!

I am 19, and new to this community. At the end of June I'm going to be visiting a friend working in Bologna, Italy. We are hoping to spend a couple of days in Bologna and then a couple of days in other cities (Florence, Venice and Rome are preferred) once she finishes working on June 30th. I'm trying to come up with an itinerary of sorts. This is a very very rough plan so far, please let me know what you think and suggest any other places/particular sites that you think we should visit! I'm only there for a week which is unfortunate, but will have to do a longer trip next time.

June 27th - I arrive in Bologna (probably late in the afternoon/early evening).
June 28th - Explore Bologna
June 29th - Make a day trip to Florence while my friend works
June 30th - Explore Bologna and potentially leave for Venice in the evening once friend is done with work.
July 1st - Venice
July 2nd - Venice
July 3rd - Rome
July 4th - I fly back to the UK (depart out of Rome so that I have some more time to look around Rome.)

I told you it was sketchy. Please help me flesh that out! :)

Winter SW USA Travel [Jan. 1st, 2010|05:25 pm]

Hello!

So, after a few twists and turns to my winter break itinerary, a road trip has been planned. I've heard wonderful things about traveling in the southwest of the US in the winter, with the cooler temperatures to hike in, and then the frost and even snow upon the red and yellow rock formations, so that's the plan! We (being my boyfriend and I) will be departing Las Vegas, and we hope to meander down through Arizona, something like Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Phoenix (friends live there), Tucson and down into Bisbee, and then driving out to San Diego. Anyone have any particular suggestions on places to explore and hike? Love the outdoors, but quirky towns and historical sights are also welcome additions to our itinerary. We can also take tangents into New Mexico and Utah if anyone can make a good case as to why they're awesome to visit in the winter. ^.^ I've been through the SW in the summer before, but I'm really looking for places that will be especially awesome in the winter (especially now that the hordes of tourists are gone.)

Thanks!

Hey guys,
I just started aupairmeet, which is designed to allow au-pairs to meet others in their area and potentially make new friends! It can be difficult getting used to a new country where you only know your host family, so that's where the comm comes in.
Please take a look, it's brand new & has no entries at the moment, but please join.

International Cell Phones [Apr. 27th, 2009|02:30 pm]

Hello,

I'll be working abroad in Europe this next summer and doing some travel on the side. To manage logistics (not idle chatter), a cell phone would be handy. Problem, my current cell phone company doesn't have any international plan - I can't even replace the SIM card. I'll be there long enough that renting seems a little out of the question. What do people recommend as far as purchasing an international phone is concerned? The one I have my eye on right now is the "Talk Abroad" phone.

What are people's favorite phones abroad? Am I missing any silly little holes here?

Thanks!

South Africa [Apr. 14th, 2009|11:57 am]

Hey hey.

I'm off back to the beautiful country that is South Africa this summer and was hoping for some destination advice. I spent 3 months there a few years ago, working out of Tzaneen in Limpopo provence. This time round I will be returning there for 6 weeks as well as spending 4 weeks in Hoedspruit working in Daktari Conservation School. However in order to get the cheapest flights I have ended up with 3 days between finishing my work at the school and flying home. As far as I can tell I can only fly to Jo'burg from Hoedspruit (Although I'm not fussed if I end up with a bus journey)

So, I will have visited Kruger many times by this point, so don't want to spend my few extra days there. Do I fly back to Jo'burg and spend 3 dyas in the city? Not generally much of a city girl, so the idea doesn't entirely appeal. Does anyone know of anywhere just outside Jo'burg that I could stay? When I say just outside I could manage about a 4 hour bus journey, as long as it doesn't cost too much! Or even just a nice hostel a little way out with enough walking/wildlife to keep me entertained?

The alternative is staying in Hoedspruit for a few days. As far as I can tell its not the hugest place in the world, would i find enough to do? How does it compare to Tzaneen (I assume its smaller??) or is there anywhere nice on the translux route back to Jo'burg?

Thats all for now, any advice you have is great, even if it doesn't quite match what I've asked for, I can be flexible!!!

Guadalajara [Mar. 16th, 2009|08:01 pm]

(cross posted)

Hello!  I'm looking for info on Guadalajara, Mexico,  and surroundings.  I'll be there to entertain myself for a couple of days before my friend meets up with me (and he's from there, so he'll have some ideas, but we have differing interests so I thought I'd get the opinions of some other folks!)

What would you check out, apart from the big historical sights downtown?  I'm very much interested in what's going on with the young folks there- politically and socially.  Are there any radical bookshops/infoshops or cultural centers?  Where do the political types hang out- neighborhoods/cafes/schools/etc?  Good venues for music or poetry?  What about queer hangouts (particularly women- not too interested in hanging out in boy bars/cruising spots!)?  And, anything just generally interesting and relatively easy to get to.

Thanks for your help!!

I'm going to attempt a version of that in Spanish- please excuse my errors.

Hago muchos errores- disculpa!

I know I shouldn't plan so thoroughly and just go where the road takes me, but with a limit of six weeks and so many amazing things to see and do I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around this trip. Originally I was thinking just Thailand and Vietnam with a stop in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat (that's really all I care to see there - forgive me if this is ignorant, eek!), but the more I read about Laos the harder I find it to leave that place out all together.
